Nintendo Switch 2 Becomes Second Fastest-Selling Console in U.S. History Despite Rising Gaming Prices

Nintendo Switch 2 has officially become the second fastest-selling gaming console in U.S. history, reaching 5.9 million units sold in its first year. Meanwhile, PS5 and Xbox are facing declining sales as console prices continue to rise across the gaming industry.

Nintendo Switch 2

The recent console from the company keeps making history in the gaming world. It has just been announced that the Nintendo Switch 2 became the second quickest-sold gaming hardware in the United States just one year into its launch based on recently published market data from Circana. The console already has 5.9 million installed devices across the country, following only the famous Game Boy Advance that had sold 6.5 million consoles in its first year.

This achievement adds up to the leading position of Nintendo in the gaming industry amidst the difficulties faced by their competitors Sony and Microsoft with declining sales, rising production expenses, and growing cost of consoles.

Nintendo Switch 2 Delivers a Historic First Year

The newly announced numbers from Circana Senior Director of Video Games, Mat Piscatella, show that the Nintendo Switch 2 has managed to secure an install base of 5.9 million US sales in just the first twelve months since its launch, putting it ahead of almost every game console ever released in America.

The only other console from Nintendo that did better than it was its own Game Boy Advance, which reached 6.5 million in its first year of release. The new data is further proof of Nintendo's previous statement about how Switch 2 became the fastest-selling hardware ever for the company.

Even with the slowing momentum towards the end of 2025 in some Western markets, Nintendo still has very high demand due to exclusive games, improved hardware, and the concept of hybrid gaming brought with the first Switch.

Price Increase Appears to Have Boosted Sales

It is surprising to note that due to Nintendo’s move to raise the price of Switch 2 by $50 from September 1, it seems to have influenced many people to buy the console prior to the new prices.

This seems to have contributed significantly to higher hardware sales in May 2026.

As per data provided by Circana, video game hardware spending rose 38% compared to last year to reach $249 million in May. Nintendo Switch 2 emerged as the bestselling console in terms of unit sales as well as total spending during the month and has been so all through 2026.

Despite the high cost of gaming, consumers seem ready to pay a premium for Nintendo’s latest console.

PlayStation and Xbox Face Difficult Market Conditions

While Nintendo saw success once again, the months for Sony and Microsoft were considerably tougher.

Spend on PlayStation 5 hardware fell 43% from the same period last year, while unit sales took an even bigger fall, declining 58% due to Sony's latest round of global pricing changes.

Xbox did not fare well either. While spend on Xbox Series hardware actually rose 7%, unit sales fell 12% overall, suggesting that users spent more money but bought less hardware.

It's worth noting as well that according to Circana, PlayStation hardware sales reached their lowest point in May in 20 years, while Xbox saw the lowest unit sales ever in May for Microsoft's gaming hardware.

This is indicative of the increasing pressure on console manufacturers as costs keep rising in the industry.

Console Gaming Is Becoming More Expensive Than Ever

Typically, the cost of console games drops when they mature, and manufacturers have made a habit of lowering prices after a few years of being out on the market, making the gaming industry very accessible to many people.

Unfortunately, 2026 marks a time where this pattern is not only broken but reversed. According to Circana data, the average selling price for gaming hardware stood at $502 in May. This marked a significant rise of 14% from the average cost of $440 last year.

One of the biggest risers was the PS5, which increased by 33% year-over-year to an average selling price of $672. The Xbox Series also saw its prices increase by 22% to an average of $524. Such high prices will alter customer expectations forever.

Industry Faces Growing Concerns Over Future Console Prices

The current pricing trend has also triggered speculations about the future generations of gaming hardware as well. According to industry reports, the future consoles, including the rumored PlayStation 6 and the next-generation Project Helix by Microsoft, could possibly be priced close to $1,000 should manufacturing costs continue rising.

Recently, Sony revealed that it had yet to decide on the release date and pricing for PlayStation 6 amid continuing shortages of memory components. Moreover, recently named Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said that the gaming industry would need “radically different business models” to continue keeping gaming consoles affordable, warning that manufacturing costs had risen so much that consumers might find it hard justifying spending thousands of dollars on the next generation of consoles.

These statements are symptomatic of increasing uncertainties in the gaming industry amidst inflation, shortage of components and manufacturing costs.

Nintendo Expects Sales to Slow Naturally

Despite the high expectations for Switch 2's success, Nintendo predicts that it will sell slightly less rapidly during its second fiscal year. The current predictions from Nintendo suggest that Switch 2 will have 16.5 million sales in the next fiscal year, as opposed to the 19.86 million sold thus far since its introduction.

However, according to some executives, sales of the first year were disproportionately centered around its release, which makes year-over-year comparisons somewhat difficult. Nevertheless, even with such moderations, total Switch 2 sales within about 22 months are predicted to beat the numbers achieved by the original Switch at the same point in its lifecycle.

Whether the Switch 2 will be able to match the extraordinary longevity of the original Switch within the upcoming decade is still an open question.

Nintendo Strengthens Its Lead During a Challenging Console Generation

The remarkable success of the Nintendo Switch 2 within its first year shows us that new hardware and games can always excite consumers even though the prices of consoles have reached their all-time highs.

On the other hand, it is important to say that Sony and Microsoft are trying to cope with a more complicated market situation because of increasing prices, higher costs of production, and decreasing consumer demand. With each generation, manufacturers have to reconsider their pricing policy in order to ensure affordable gaming experience for mainstream users.

Nowadays, Nintendo can be proud of the fact that its console is a real success. The Switch 2 has managed not only to become one of the best-selling consoles in American history but also has reaffirmed the good reputation of the company as a developer of hardware products that attract long-term users and novices.
