Nothing is preparing to expand its smartphone portfolio with a brand-new B Series, and all signs currently point to the first device being the Nothing Phone (4b). After teasing the mysterious “(b)” branding, the company has now offered a partial glimpse of the upcoming phone’s design, while co-founder Akis Evangelidis has clarified where the B Series fits in Nothing’s growing lineup.

It seems like nothing will cause a revolution in its phone series for now. Having established itself with the iconic Number series of phones and the more budget-friendly Phone (a), the London company is about to introduce an entirely new “B” phone series. This news is especially important since it represents the continuation of the company’s growth by expanding its phone strategy while slowly gaining momentum in the premium mid-range phone market.
This news comes after numerous teasers from Nothing India regarding the enigmatic “(b)” branding. Starting with a cryptic social media teaser, Nothing started dropping some very revealing hints pointing toward the launch of a new phone, which is likely to be the Nothing Phone (4b). Despite Nothing not making an official announcement on what the exact naming will be, everything seems to point to Nothing introducing a third phone series in addition to their two existing phone series.
Nothing confirms the B series
The most convincing proof was provided by Akis Evangelidis, Co-Founder and President of India at Nothing, who turned to X in order to reveal what the B brand really means. Evangelidis assured us that B Series is neither an isolated attempt at giving their devices names nor a shortened version of a certain feature. It is just a natural step in the development of Nothing’s product range hierarchy.
Evangelidis noted that the naming system used by the company has very clear principles – numbers denote generations, and letters denote product ranges. This means that B Series should exist along with A Series and not substitute it. In addition, Evangelidis highlighted that A Series remains the most expensive line of Nothing products except their flagships, and the B Series is going to cover a separate market niche.
This is a significant differentiation since we now have an indication of how Nothing is going to position its future devices. Up to now, Nothing’s smartphone positioning was quite straightforward. The company’s flagship line-up is represented by the Nothing Phone line-up, whereas the Nothing Phone (a) line-up has been designed for customers who want the Nothing experience but not from an expensive phone. The new B Series paves the way for a totally different level of devices that will either fit into the gap created by the existing A Series or fall just below the A Series level.
Why the B Series matters
Nothing is not anymore an experimental startup that plays with its single hero product. During the past couple of years, the firm managed to build up its own recognizable design language, to grow its global retail footprint, and to establish a strong fan community that values clearness in aesthetics and software. However, along with the growth comes the need for diversification without misleading customers.
It is precisely there where the B Series seems to come in handy. According to Evangelidis, the aim is to preserve the product hierarchy while expanding. From a practical perspective, it means that Nothing is trying to stay away from the confusion in naming that often strikes smartphone companies because of numerous additions like "Lite," "Pro," "SE," "Neo," "Max," etc. Rather, the firm seems to create a clearer product hierarchy where every letter stands for a specific class of products.
This can actually be a wise strategy, if done properly. The A Series has proven its worth as one of Nothing's most popular line of smartphones through its emphasis on basics and its characteristic design approach. On the other hand, the B Series can offer Nothing the opportunity to try out something new regarding price range, hardware trade-offs, or audience without compromising the uniqueness of their existing product lineup.
Nothing Phone (4b) teaser
Speculations about the first phone in B Series have only intensified since Nothing India dropped another teaser titled “(b)usted.” While the previous teaser featured only the “(b)” letter, the latest teaser provides a glimpse of what the phone looks like, though still leaving us short of seeing the whole device.
Most importantly, the teased smartphone features the very same transparent design approach used by Nothing. In the partial image shown on the teaser, one can see some internal components peeking through from behind, immediately identifying the phone as a member of Nothing’s design lineup. The thing is that this particular design approach, such as a transparent back, has become something of a trademark for Nothing, as more and more smartphones begin to look the same.
This is very good news for the fans of Nothing. While a new product line would have been a chance for Nothing to completely change the design direction, the teaser shows us that Nothing actually decided to keep the design elements that have brought success to the brand. This implies that the Phone (4b), or whatever its name will turn out to be, will remain distinctly Nothing despite being targeted at a different consumer segment.
There is another interesting fact mentioned in the teaser that has started discussions. The configuration of the camera module seems interesting due to the fact that the upcoming phone seems to have just one camera on the back of the device. It is interesting since most mid-ranged smartphones today have either dual cameras or triple cameras, even though they do not work that effectively in all cases.
There are several possible explanations for having just one camera on the back of the device. In the first case, it means that the company decided to reduce the complexity of the hardware on purpose in order to reach a certain price point. In the second case, it means that the phone does not try to win with spec sheets but offers basic functionality. However, it is also possible that there are more sensors hidden somewhere else.
However, the fact that the hardware of the camera is noticeable means that the first smartphone of the B Series may end up not being within the flagship range but even lower than the A Series smartphones in its premium status. In case it turns out to be true, then this can mean that Nothing is trying to target a lower market segment without losing its unique identity.
Could Nothing be creating a third smartphone category?
And that is the key question. While being in the smartphone industry, Nothing has been operating with the rather slim range of phones. Consumers were given just two options – the Phone series for high-end products and the Phone (a) series for budget Nothing. The launch of the Phone (4b) would become the debut of Nothing in launching anything beyond the two-tier system.
By becoming one of the core ranges for the brand, the B Series would make it possible for Nothing to be more flexible when addressing different price segments. The brand would be able to occupy the segment between the budget phones and mid-range, to create an even more affordable design-centric product, or even try different pricing policies depending on the regions (such as India, where cost-efficiency is critical).
This would make things even more intriguing when considering the recently released information about the fact that Nothing will not be launching any new CMF-branded smartphones this year. Considering the fact that CMF will not be participating in the current smartphone discussion at the moment, the B series phones might allow Nothing to compensate for this gap under the main company brand. To put it in another way, Nothing might apply the same approach to its smartphones.
Where the Nothing Phone (4b) could fit in the lineup
Since Nothing has not disclosed any information related to the specifications, price or positioning of the model, it can be assumed that the B Series is intended for a market niche which the brand did not target before. Traditionally, the A Series was known for offering the best combination of design, performance and value for money, whereas the Number series was targeting premium buyers. The new B Series will either find itself between the mentioned models or take the opposite direction and become an easy gateway into the world of Nothing.
Currently, there is a possibility of both approaches. In case the Phone (4b) is placed by Nothing higher than the A Series, it will become a bridge from the budget and mid-range segments to the premium mid-range one. Otherwise, in case of placing below the A Series, it will become a stripped-down version of Nothing phone focused on design and performance.
However, what makes the announcement even more intriguing are the facts about the single rear-facing camera visible from the pictures, the teaser language used, and the focus on "expanding into a new segment." This implies that Nothing is trying to innovate with its phone and not simply create yet another variant of the same device.
Nothing Phone (4b) launch timeline
However, there has been no official announcement regarding the launch date of the first phone under B Series. The teaser campaign has been hinting that the unveiling of the first device under the B Series can be expected anytime soon. As a matter of fact, the company is currently moving beyond the general hints about its brand to teasers on the hardware part, which is a sign of an approaching launch event.
There have been many speculations and rumors about the first unveiling of the new smartphone under the brand Nothing in the middle of July, specifically the Nothing Phone (4b). Although nothing has been officially confirmed yet, the activity in the teaser campaign is a good indicator that the unveiling is expected shortly.
A launch of the device in the middle of July will help Nothing have something new in their hands to continue building momentum in the second half of the year amid the growing competition within the mid-range category of smartphones.
This is why nothing’s B series announcement should be viewed not as a mere change in product nomenclature. The manufacturer is clearly shifting towards a new approach to marketing smartphones. This is another sign that Nothing is ready to conquer additional market segments while maintaining its sleek and innovative design that once made it unique. In addition, Evangelidis' explanation gives us a better understanding of what to expect from Nothing's plans. Namely, the B series will not replace the A Series but develop it, enabling the manufacturer to expand into new market niches.
At the moment, the Nothing Phone (4b) is still under wraps. There is plenty of information that we do not have regarding this product. However, as the company starts openly talking about its plans and even showing its products, it seems that the time of their presentation is not far away. If the company can offer a fresh price-to-design ratio for its smartphones, the B series can become a very interesting addition to the lineup.
