A new leak suggests Samsung may replace the Galaxy S Plus model with the Galaxy S27 Pro. The upcoming flagship could feature Samsung’s innovative ALoP zoom camera, potentially delivering better low-light telephoto photography than the Galaxy S27 Ultra.

Samsung could be setting out on a massive change for its smartphone line-up. In the past, the Galaxy S models used to adhere to an almost predictable pattern with regular versions, Plus models, and Ultra devices. But as some recent leaks indicate, the South Korean company could soon switch to the naming convention which smartphone consumers are more accustomed to, due to the efforts of Apple.
Following in the footsteps of Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO that started using the designations of "Pro" and "Pro Max" in their smartphones, Samsung might also start using the same nomenclature soon. As per the latest reports, the upcoming Galaxy S27 range will get a fresh model by the name of the Galaxy S27 Pro, possibly replacing the Galaxy S Plus version and outmatching its performance in terms of photography.
Samsung Could Finally Ditch the Plus Branding
The Plus model of the Galaxy S has been known to straddle the line between the regular flagship model of Samsung phones and its high-end Ultra model. Despite providing the benefits of having a bigger screen and battery capacity compared to the regular model, the Plus model seemed redundant in light of the advanced capabilities of the Ultra model.
According to previous reports, Samsung was planning on doing away with the Plus model and replacing it with a Pro model for the Galaxy S26 series of devices. As it turns out, Samsung apparently never followed through on those plans but new leaks suggest it just might do so for the Galaxy S27 line.
Interestingly enough, the Galaxy S27 Pro might not just be a name change for the existing Plus model. It appears that Samsung would want to distinguish itself even more by offering exclusive camera hardware and premium features on the Pro model.

Samsung’s Advanced ALoP Camera Technology
Another very interesting development that comes from this new leak is related to Samsung's All Lenses on Prism (ALoP) technology. As reported, the upcoming Galaxy S27 Pro could be equipped with a 50MP telephoto camera using the ALoP design by Samsung. The latter was developed by Samsung specifically for producing slim periscope zoom cameras and ensuring high image quality at the same time.
Periscope zoom cameras normally feature lenses placed between the prism and the image sensor. The ALoP design developed by Samsung does not rely on this configuration. It involves placing the lenses right above the prism. There are some benefits associated with this design.
First, it is possible to create a much smaller camera module. In other words, the bump would be smaller. Second, but not less important, it would allow better light transmission from the lenses to the sensor. This would ensure improved image quality due to better light capturing. Photos taken with such a camera could be brighter and have higher quality. They would be especially impressive in poor lighting conditions such as indoors or on cloudy days.
Ultra in Everyday Photography
According to the report, the telephoto lens on the Galaxy S27 Pro will provide optical zoom up to 3.5x, and the Galaxy S27 Ultra will have a more conventional telephoto lens that provides 50MP resolution and 5x optical zoom.
In theory, the Ultra still takes precedence when it comes to long-distance photos due to its higher zoom capability. Nevertheless, smartphone cameras are not all about being able to zoom further.
For instance, people tend to take photos of themselves, portraits, street scenes, food, and other day-to-day subjects rather than distant objects. Consequently, the capability to gather more light is more critical in such cases.
As Samsung ALoP technology aims to make pictures brighter and sharper, this will result in a situation when the less expensive Pro version of the phone becomes a favorite for everyday photography enthusiasts, while the Ultra continues to rule the realm of high zooms.
Shared Flagship Camera Hardware Between Pro and Ultra
Another key aspect of the leak involves Samsung's efforts to reduce the disparity between the Pro and Ultra versions.
According to reports, both the phones might incorporate the same huge 200MP sensor on their rear cameras. The two flagships might also come with ultrawide shooters that are identical. In that case, the telephoto lens becomes one of the few differences that might distinguish the Galaxy S27 Pro from the Galaxy S27 Ultra.
This is a trend that has been followed by other tech giants like Apple and Google, which have decided to offer flagship-level rear cameras in their premium phone families. Rather than make customers pay extra money for getting the most impressive main camera in their phones, firms tend to make flagship photography available in a variety of gadgets while only making some exclusive to high-end models. This is great news for buyers of premium handsets.
Premium Design and Display Expected
The Galaxy S27 Pro may have an OLED screen measuring 6.47 inches, thus making it a smaller premium flagship compared to its large Ultra counterpart. Some of the high-end specifications that may be sourced by Samsung from the Ultra variant include high-end display features, flagship-level processors, premium construction, as well as AI-powered applications on smartphones.
With such specifications, Samsung will be able to offer flagship features on its smartphone without having to make people buy the biggest smartphone from its line-up. Smartphone users today love small phones that can fit comfortably into their palms; hence, the Galaxy S27 Pro might provide the perfect combination of premium features and a small size.
S Pen Likely to Remain Exclusive to the Ultra
Though the Galaxy S27 Pro may end up featuring quite a few Ultra-spec features, there is one significant feature missing from the lineup. According to leaks, Samsung would keep its S Pen capabilities exclusive to the Galaxy S27 Ultra.
The S Pen capability became one of the top unique features that differentiate Samsung smartphones in the upper segment, especially targeting productivity-conscious customers. Thus, by making sure its S Pens can only work with the Galaxy S27 Ultra, Samsung keeps its product lines distinctive while still offering an exciting Pro model option.
However, for most customers, the lack of this capability might not be an issue at all, as previous customer surveys showed that only a small number of Galaxy Ultras' users actually utilize their styluses.
Samsung May Be Following Apple and Google’s Strategy
The Galaxy S27 Pro reportedly seems to have taken the same path that Apple and Google have been pursuing over the past few years.
Pro iPhones from Apple serve as the go-to choice for people wanting flagship experience and camera sensors without having to go for the largest and most expensive models. On the other hand, the Pixel Pro series from Google is all about providing premium photo features and flagship experience in a smartphone without making any sacrifices. Samsung might be trying to target the same market segment with its Pro smartphones.
By not adding any size increment through the Plus variant, Samsung could concentrate on bringing value-added premium features like better camera technology, flagship-grade processors, and others under the Pro category. Such an approach will help consumers understand what Samsung’s Pro phones mean easily.
What This Means for Smartphone Buyers
Assuming that these reports are accurate, the Galaxy S27 Pro could end up being one of the most desirable flagship phones from Samsung in quite some time.
While there are plenty of people who don’t require zooming at 100x magnification or the S Pen. All they care about are top-of-the-line camera quality, power, design, and software update availability. The Galaxy S27 Pro seems to have been designed for just that kind of consumer.
By featuring the same high-resolution main camera module, premium OLED display, flagship hardware, and better low-light capabilities in the telephoto sensor, it can provide the majority of what the Ultra model does, albeit at a lower price point.
This move would make Samsung’s flagship lineup more cohesive and straightforward. For consumers, they wouldn’t have any difficulty picking the correct model without being forced to pay for features they will never use.
While there have been no official statements from Samsung regarding the Galaxy S27 range, recent rumors have provided some insight into the future plan for Samsung’s flagship devices. The introduction of a Galaxy S27 Pro device could signal the end of the Plus era and represent a move towards more luxurious smartphones.
However, the biggest surprise could lie in the new ALoP camera technology. Though the Galaxy S27 Ultra would continue its legacy in far-reaching photography with a zoom lens, the Galaxy S27 Pro would likely perform better when it comes to close-up telephoto shooting and low-light scenarios.
As the release date of the Galaxy S27 line looms near, smartphone aficionados around the world await developments from Samsung.
