Spotify has formally announced a brand-new Mix feature for Premium subscribers that brings playlist listening to the next level. In beta currently, the feature brings with it custom transitions between songs that enables users to achieve smooth, DJ-like effects right within the app. With rose-tinted fades, buildup effects, and blend options, Spotify is hoping to push the way people listen to their playlists.
To access the Mix feature, Premium subscribers need only to update their Spotify app through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. On updating, a new Mix button is available at the head of playlists, nestled between the "Add" and "Edit" sections. Tapping on it allows users to implement automatic transitions instantly or go deeper into customization for more tailored playback.
Spotify's Mix feature appears to be a straightforward reaction to Apple Music's just-debuted AutoMix, which will arrive later this year for iPhone owners with iOS 26. While Apple's AutoMix generates pro-level seamless transitions on its own, Spotify granted listeners more creative control. Spotify doesn't adopt Apple's so-called one-size-fits-all strategy but lets listeners edit transitions by hand with volume controls, equalizer settings, and audio effects.
It is the dual audio waveform editor that distinguishes Spotify's method, with complete control over timing and smoothness of transitioning between songs. A gradual fade or a dramatic pick-up in tempo is easily achieved through the Mix tool, with the flexibility to tweak all the details. Making it even more formidable, Spotify allows you to save your own personal transitions in playlists, ensuring your preferred mix style is always available.
Spotify also incorporates music theory aspects into its Mix feature. Next to every track, users will now have key and beats-per-minute (BPM) information, which ensures transitions are natural and professional-sounding. Spotify even suggests pairing tracks with similar tempos and keys in order to preserve the rhythm flow and prevent awkward transitions. This is a smart move toward making any user feel like a DJ without needing extensive technical expertise.
With music streaming becoming more competitive, features like Mix are a big win for listeners who want more control over their playlists. Whether you’re hosting a party, creating a workout mix, or just enhancing your daily listening sessions, Spotify’s customizable transitions make playlists feel fresh, dynamic, and uniquely personal.
By rolling out Mix, Spotify is not only playing catch-up with Apple Music's AutoMix but also forging ahead with more intense personalization. This combination of automated and user-driven suggestions mirrors Spotify's approach to keeping music fans enthralled and committed to its platform. As the beta roll-out continues, it's possible that the Mix feature will soon be a premium subscribers' must-have accessory.
