Summer Game Fest 2025 Revealed These Games But Not All Survived

One year after Summer Game Fest 2025, some games became massive hits while others struggled to survive. Here's what happened to Resident Evil Requiem, 007 First Light, Arc Raiders, MindsEye, Splitgate 2, and more.

Summer Game Fest 2025

Summer Game Fest occurs annually and is regarded as one of the largest platforms for the gaming community in which blockbuster releases, groundbreaking indie titles, and many other exciting announcements are made throughout the event. Despite being capable of attracting millions of views on reveal trailers within days, the true test of whether or not a game will succeed comes afterwards.

Since Summer Game Fest 2026 is upon us now, it's a perfect time to revisit some of the most significant events at Summer Game Fest 2025 to review how well their games were received by players after their respective launches. Some of the titles succeeded beyond everyone's imagination, while others had problems with user retention or faced some controversy.

Here is an overview of what happened with some of the most talked about games from Summer Game Fest 2025, including Capcom's long-awaited sequel Resident Evil Requiem and controversial MindsEye.

Resident Evil Requiem Continues Capcom's Winning Streak

All the games that appeared at Summer Game Fest 2025 generated quite some buzz. However, one title that caught everyone's eye is definitely Resident Evil Requiem. It was undoubtedly one of the main highlights of the entire event owing mostly to Capcom's unprecedentedly successful performance in recent years.

This Japanese company proved itself time after time thanks to its titles such as Resident Evil and Monster Hunter. Not only did Capcom develop great AAA games but also managed to establish its good financial position. Therefore, it could afford more risky endeavors such as Pragmata and Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess.

With so much attention focused on Resident Evil Requiem, it is not surprising that it helped improve Capcom's reputation as an extremely dependable studio for games. This title is definitely a real gem among those associated with Summer Game Fest 2025.

Last Flag Became Another Live-Service Casualty

There have been numerous instances of the launching of live-service games with grand ambitions but fading away quickly thereafter. Sadly enough, Last Flag became one of them.

Developed by the Night Street Games, the creators of this game were none other than the singer of Imagine Dragons band, Dan Reynolds and his brother Mac Reynolds. Clearly, the game was the result of several years of hard work and passion.

Nevertheless, this game launched at a time when the live-services space had become highly competitive with players feeling fatigued towards investing themselves in new multiplayer ecosystems. In addition, there needed to be a very strong reason for them to feel committed to a particular game and Last Flag failed miserably at achieving that.

It is worth noting that just a few weeks after its launch, developers announced that any further support for the game would be scaled down. Thus, hopes of this becoming a great multiplayer game became nothing more than pipe dreams.

007 First Light Revitalized James Bond Gaming

There was little doubt about IO Interactive's capability to develop an immersive spy experience due to their long-standing experience with the Hitman franchise and its unique assassination sandbox gameplay.

What stunned everyone was IO Interactive's ability to effectively apply their expertise in creating a quality game for a spy film hero, such as James Bond.

007 First Light is now recognized by experts and fans alike as one of the best James Bond games made in decades. The gameplay and its elements of espionage, gadgets, and stealth combined with cinematic presentation allowed the game to become a commercial hit upon release.

After the acquisition of the James Bond intellectual property by Amazon, some feared that IO Interactive could potentially lose control over developing future projects involving James Bond.

However, IO Interactive's assurances have done much to reassure fans that this will not be the case. For this reason, fans can still hope that 007 First Light serves as a starting point for a long-standing franchise rather than a standalone game.

Arc Raiders Proves Extraction Shooters Still Have Momentum

Despite claims by some gamers of their weariness with live service games, extraction shooters follow another set of principles.

Arc Raiders was released at the end of 2025 and gained immense hype, managing to capitalize on it effectively. One peculiarity of this game is that, unlike most other multiplayer games which quickly see a significant drop in user numbers, Arc Raiders remains popular among its fans. This means that gamers can enjoy an online-oriented title as long as it is designed properly and offers something interesting to do.

It is worth mentioning that Arc Raiders remained popular despite the problems faced by the game developer due to comments made by Nexon executives in regard to generative AI. Despite bad publicity generated as a result of those statements, the developers did not suffer much from it.

Mixtape Sparked One of Gaming's Most Interesting Debates

This does not mean that all games' success depends on how many copies or users a game has. Mixtape, an old-school coming-of-age tale filled with tracks by popular bands, including Devo and Stan Bush, became one of the most widely-discussed indie titles.

For some gamers, the title represented a game with engaging narration, realistic characters, and a touching soundtrack. For others, Mixtape was a product relying excessively on nostalgia and representing a particular adolescent world.

This discussion continued for several weeks and could be found at numerous social media sites and gaming forums. In some cases, people even doubted whether Mixtape could be referred to as a "proper" video game, but this did nothing else but encourage more debate.

Irrespective of their positions in the ongoing discussions, gamers should note that Mixtape proved to be successful in achieving what a lot of games lack - cultural relevance.

Deadpool VR Delivered Laughs Before Studio Closure

Among the most entertaining revelations at Summer Game Fest 2025 was that of Deadpool VR. The initial trailer quickly became a talking point, with viewers being unable to recognize the voice of Marvel's controversial mercenary for quite some time before it was officially revealed that actor Neil Patrick Harris was voicing him.

In general, Deadpool VR received positive feedback for its fun gameplay and action-packed experience. Regrettably, the news about its development studio became rather disappointing. According to reports, Twisted Pixel, which developed Deadpool VR, was closed by Meta not long ago.

There was no connection between this move and the poor reception of the game, since this decision was made as part of a company strategy aimed at expanding artificial intelligence projects. Two more studios were closed for the same reason.

Mina the Hollower Becomes an Indie Success Story

The one game at Summer Game Fest 2025 that embodies the benefits of delayed releases is Mina the Hollower. Mina the Hollower is a video game that hails from Yacht Club Games, the maker behind Shovel Knight. Originally meant to be released in October 2025, developers opted to delay its release until June 2026.

Evidently, that additional time helped immensely in improving the game's performance. It is said that Mina the Hollower managed to sell over 300,000 copies within only three days of its launch in what can be called one of the best years for independent games. This means that developers are now confident that such sales allow them to operate independently without needing any investment or laying off workers. In light of the many layoffs and closures plaguing the industry, Mina the Hollower can thus be called a breath of fresh air.

MindsEye Became One of 2025's Biggest Disappointments

However, not all the most hyped-up games manage to meet their fans' expectations, and MindsEye is a rather vivid illustration in the context of Summer Game Fest 2025. In particular, MindsEye was created under the supervision of the creator of Grand Theft Auto, Leslie Benzies. As a result, numerous gamers believed that it would become one of the biggest projects of the year.

In reality, MindsEye became one of the worst projects of its time. The technical problems, inconsistency between various game systems, and poor polish made players disappointed in the game. Moreover, the company later admitted that MindsEye had been developed in an unfavorable environment with the use of special monitoring software. Additionally, the head of Build a Rocket Boy claimed that MindsEye had been sabotaged both internally and externally. In order to prove his point, the company decided to create an exclusive mission that would present additional evidence to the gaming community. Nonetheless, gamers considered it to be rather weak.

Consequently, MindsEye may be regarded as one of the most striking illustrations of the year.

Splitgate 2 Struggled to Escape Controversy

On other occasions, the advertising of the game becomes more popular than the game itself. This seems to have been the case with Splitgate 2.

At Summer Game Fest 2025, CEO of 1047 Games Ian Proulx grabbed everyone’s attention wearing a hat which bore the slogan “Make FPS Great Again.” Though his intention might have been to draw people's attention to the upcoming game, the uproar that came about made any discussion about Splitgate 2 impossible. After the release of the game, new problems started to arise, including the retention of players, microtransactions, and the battle royale game mode that were considered annoying.

As a result, the creators sent the game back into beta, redesigned some aspects of it, and then released it again with a new title Splitgate: Arena Reloaded. It is yet to be seen whether the game will become successful after its relaunch.

In retrospect, it is clear that Summer Game Fest 2025 revealed the capriciousness of the current gaming industry. On the one hand, there were games which turned out to be successful beyond expectations; yet, on the other hand, some promising titles found themselves in trouble.

Resident Evil Requiem, 007 First Light, Arc Raiders, and Mina the Hollower were among those titles that showed that good implementation could help to win the favor of gamers. However, Last Flag, MindsEye, and Splitgate 2 proved that success was increasingly difficult to achieve due to fierce competition.

Despite having been announced at Summer Game Fest 2026, it is obvious that not all the trailers shown there could foresee what the future held in store for a particular title; the true story began once gamers tried the game.
