Is ChatGPT Down? Thousands Report OpenAI Issues as Users Face Connection Errors

ChatGPT users are reporting connection errors and service disruptions, with thousands of outage reports appearing online. Here's everything we know about the latest OpenAI outage.
Have you been asking yourself if ChatGPT is down? Well, you are definitely not alone. Several thousand users have experienced issues accessing OpenAI’s AI chatbot, leading to the trending topic on Google where users look for information regarding the problem. Although the service disruption does not seem to be a worldwide issue, many users have experienced errors while using ChatGPT.

As per the outage tracking website Downdetector, the reports of an outage in OpenAI started to increase just after 7:30 p.m. EST. The outage hit a high point at around that time, where almost 2,000 users had reported outages. It should be noted that more than 80% of those reports pertained to ChatGPT. Many users took to social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit to share screenshots of error messages they were getting while accessing ChatGPT. One such message was:
"upstream connect error or disconnect/reset before headers. retried and the latest reset connection timeout."
This error typically indicates that ChatGPT was unable to establish a stable connection with OpenAI's servers, preventing users from loading conversations or generating responses.
ChatGPT Outage Doesn't Appear to Be Global
Even though the outage is having an effect on thousands of users, it is not affecting everyone equally. The fact that many individuals are continuing their use of ChatGPT suggests that there might be some regional or network restrictions in the problem.
To date, OpenAI has not released any estimates regarding when they will restore their services. The engineers are currently studying the problem while keeping an eye on the performance of the platform.
OpenAI Recently Experienced Another Service Disruption
This isn't the first service interruption users have experienced recently. Earlier this month, on Monday, July 7, OpenAI dealt with another temporary outage that affected several products beyond ChatGPT itself.
During that incident, users experienced problems with multiple features, including:
Codex
Custom GPT Search
Workspace Analytics
Conversation Search
ChatGPT User Invitations
Compliance Log Platform download endpoint
The company acknowledged the disruption and explained that the problems were primarily affecting FedRAMP workspaces, which are government-focused environments designed to meet strict U.S. federal security requirements.
OpenAI Confirmed Core Services Were Restored
After the previous interruption, OpenAI assured the public that its main services had been fixed, but some other functions in connection with FedRAMP still had problems.
In particular, the company said that it was still aware of the problems with Codex, Workspace Analytics, Conversation Search, Custom GPT search, ChatGPT user invitations, and Compliance Logs Platform Download endpoint in FedRAMP workspaces.
It also added that its engineering team had been working to fix those problems.
What Should You Do If ChatGPT Isn't Working?
If ChatGPT isn't loading or is displaying connection timeout errors, there are a few simple steps you can try while OpenAI works on resolving the issue:
Refresh the page and try again after a few minutes.
Log out and sign back into your OpenAI account.
Try accessing ChatGPT from another browser or device.
Clear your browser cache if the issue persists.
Wait for OpenAI to restore affected servers if the problem is caused by an ongoing outage.
In most cases involving server-side disruptions, there is little users can do beyond waiting for the service to stabilize.
Nevertheless, ChatGPT still counts among one of the most used AI assistants on the planet, so any downtime is sure to have a big effect on a huge number of people across the globe. Although the current one is apparently not the total failure of its services on a global scale, 2,000+ reports and connection timeout errors show that there are quite a lot of problems right now.
No estimates have been officially made by OpenAI regarding when the service would be up and running again properly. For now, all users who have problems can only wait until they solve everything.
