A brand new Instagram feature known as Instants has begun to roll out without warning, and although this feature was intended to speed up image sharing and keep information more private, it appears that many people have found themselves quite confused once they ended up sending their images unintentionally by testing the new feature out for the very first time. This feature has not only rolled out worldwide, but also among people using Instagram in India, resulting in lots of queries about how the feature works, whether it can be turned off altogether, and how one can undo any accidentally sent images.

Instants is quite different from other features of Instagram such as Stories and Direct Messages as this feature does not let you see, edit, or confirm your images before sending them out.
What Is Instagram Instants
Instants is a brand new photo deletion feature on Instagram's DMs. Its purpose is straightforward; people can take quick snaps and share them with friends for a short time, and the images disappear once seen.
This feature can be found within the Instagram inbox tab. Users can access the Instant feature by clicking the small photo stack icon located at the lower right side of the DM page. Upon accessing this feature, Instagram shows an introductory message saying that photos will disappear after seeing them and that replies will be kept secret. However, things get tricky from there.
Users don't receive any kind of instruction or prompt to guide them throughout the feature; instead, they get directed straight into the camera screen. People tend to believe that they are still within the preview screen, but they actually send the photo right away when they click the shutter button.
Why Instagram Users Are Accidentally Sending Photos
The main problem with Instants lies in the default target audience feature. Instagram offers users two sharing buttons below the shutter one “Friends” and “Close Friends”. The problem here lies in the default selection of “Friends”, which means the photo will be sent right away to all the contacts that belong to the user’s Friends category.
As Instagram doesn’t notify users about this feature during onboarding, a lot of users ended up sending their photos without knowing that they were already sent.
The whole concept of this function seems to contradict the way users normally interact with Instagram as users always have some time to preview the post, make changes, and even delete something before the content goes public. In this case, the moment people press the shutter button, the content is immediately sent out there.
As a result, many new users thought they were just trying out the camera while in reality, they had already sent their photos.
How to Unsend an Instagram Instant Photo
Thankfully, Instagram has included a few ways to retract photos shared accidentally through Instants. However, timing matters a lot.
Use the Undo Option Immediately
Right after sending an Instant photo, Instagram briefly shows an “Undo” button below the shutter area. Users need to tap it quickly before the recipient opens the image.
Here’s how it works:
Capture and send the photo
Quickly look for the “Undo” option
Tap it immediately to retract the image
The problem is that the Undo button only appears for a very short time. If users miss it, they need to use another method.
Alternative Method to Delete Shared Instants
Instagram also allows users to unsend Instants through the archive section, especially if recipients have not viewed the image yet.
Follow these steps:
Open the Instants camera section
Tap the four-box icon located in the top-right corner
Open your Instants archive
Find the shared image and delete it
If the recipient has not opened the Instant yet, deleting it from the archive will unsend the image successfully.
This method has become particularly important for users who accidentally shared photos to their full Friends list instead of Close Friends.
How to Turn Off Instagram Instants Completely
Many users who tested Instants once are now looking for ways to disable it entirely. Instagram thankfully provides a built-in option to hide the feature from the inbox.
Here’s how users can turn it off:
Open Instagram and go to your profile
Tap the three-line menu in the top-right corner
Open “Settings”
Scroll down and select “Content Preferences”
Look for “Hide Instants in Inbox”
Turn the toggle on
Once enabled, the Instants section disappears from the DM inbox completely. Users also stop seeing Instants shared by others.
This option is especially useful for people who prefer Instagram’s traditional messaging experience and do not want accidental photo sharing risks.
Temporary Option to Stop Receiving Instants
For users who do not want to disable the feature completely, Instagram also offers a temporary control option.
Users can simply:
Press and hold the Instants section inside the inbox
Swipe right to temporarily pause receiving Instants
This works as a middle-ground solution for people who occasionally want to use the feature without constantly seeing it in their inbox.
Why Instagram’s Instant Sharing Approach Feels Risky
While Instagram seems to head towards speedier and instantaneous communication, just like Snapchat, which emphasizes disappearing photos within a second, Instants makes a fundamental difference in its users’ expectations.
Social media users are normally used to going through a review process prior to posting or sharing anything online. Even when dealing with temporary messages, there always comes a set of editing options, preview windows, filters, captions, or any other features.
This is completely skipped in the Instants app. It is this immediate delivery mechanism that causes such confusion among users. Indeed, some reports have indicated that users thought they were previewing the photo while, in reality, it was delivered to several users.
It might become more clear for people in the future, although at the moment, this problem exists due to lack of explanations from Instagram during the process of configuring the app.

Instagram Instants Could Improve With Better Warnings
The most significant issue with Instants is not the concept itself but Instagram’s poor communication skills regarding its implementation. A mere notification stating that clicking on the shutter button will instantly send the picture would have saved many people from posting their images unintentionally.
However, the company might consider enhancing the onboarding process or introducing an option for a confirmatory click according to the feedback provided by customers. Meanwhile, it is essential to be very cautious when trying out this feature for the first time. Reviewing the audience settings to see if they are on “Friends” or “Close Friends” is a more secure method at present.
Instagram Instant is definitely a tool for fast and personal messaging, yet its odd instant sending process has puzzled and annoyed most of its users.
Luckily, the application offers a range of options for undoing and deleting pictures from the archives, and people who find this feature annoying can also choose to completely conceal it in their inbox settings.
The only way out for now is learning about how this feature operates before testing it out since just a single click might accidentally send photos to all your friends in an instant without even showing any preview window.
