WhatsApp is gradually rolling out its new usernames feature, allowing users to start conversations without revealing their phone numbers. Here's everything you need to know about the privacy-focused update.

WhatsApp finally starts taking one of the most important steps towards better user privacy. The social media company's messaging application is reported to have begun testing its highly anticipated usernames feature with a select number of Android and iPhone users. The new feature enables the users to engage into conversations with their unique username instead of their personal phone number, thus aligning itself with competitors such as Telegram, Signal, and Discord.
The new feature is being tested by a selected number of users on the stable version as well as the beta version of the application. It seems that the company will soon start rolling out the feature for other users as well.
WhatsApp Usernames Finally Arrive for Select Users
WhatsApp has traditionally used only the phone number to identify users. In addition to being effective for connecting with people in one's private network, this has also meant that anyone wishing to communicate via WhatsApp was compelled to use their phone number to do so.
The usernames feature marks a huge shift in that regard. By opting in to this feature, users get the option to give a username instead of the phone number to those with whom they are about to converse. It is an added layer of protection in addition to WhatsApp's regular chatting experience.
It should be mentioned that WhatsApp won't stop using the phone number to register and verify accounts or to send and receive messages on the platform. Phone numbers will be seen in chat histories as well. The usernames feature would only be useful to create new chats and not replace WhatsApp's identity system.
How to Create or Reserve Your WhatsApp Username
According to reports from WABetaInfo, users who receive the feature will notice a banner at the top of the Chats tab indicating that usernames are now available for their account.
To check whether the feature has reached your account:
Open WhatsApp
Go to Settings
Tap on your Profile
Look for the new Username option
Users are allowed to make changes or deletion to their username whenever they want. Deletion of the username means that conversations will now be made via the registered phone number from now on.
Another recent feature is username reservation, which enables users to reserve their preferred username until the entire roll-out. For those whose accounts are connected to their Meta Account Center, they can reserve the same username used in Facebook or Instagram.
WhatsApp Will Notify Contacts About Username Changes
In order to avoid misunderstandings and the risk of being imitated, WhatsApp has implemented another layer of security.
Whenever an individual changes his username, he will receive a system-generated notification in the chat of all the contacts he currently has on WhatsApp. This is done to make sure that the user realizes the change in his public profile.
WhatsApp Username Rules You Need to Know
While usernames provide greater flexibility, WhatsApp has also introduced several important limitations.
Unlike social media platforms, WhatsApp will not include a searchable public directory. People cannot simply search for partial usernames or browse accounts. Instead, users must know the exact username before they can initiate a conversation.
For some accounts, WhatsApp may also offer an optional Username Key, adding another security layer.
If enabled, someone trying to contact you for the first time must know both:
Your exact username
Your Username Key
However, the additional key is not required if:
You've already chatted before.
You're members of the same group.
They already have your phone number saved.
They message you first.
This extra verification helps reduce spam and makes it significantly harder for unknown users to contact someone without permission.
The arrival of usernames is perhaps one of the biggest privacy-related updates from WhatsApp in recent times.
A lot of people do not feel comfortable revealing their personal phone numbers during transactions or even conversations while purchasing items, interacting with groups or companies, or even while networking professionally. With the arrival of usernames, this issue will be addressed, as people will be able to interact without revealing any private information.
With this new update, WhatsApp will become more on par with rivals like Telegram, Signal, and Discord, which have offered usernames in communications for several years now.
India Reportedly Reviewing WhatsApp Username Rollout
Despite the positive reception, the feature has reportedly attracted regulatory attention in India.
Previous reports suggested that the Indian government requested Meta to delay introducing usernames in the country until consultations regarding user safety and impersonation risks are completed.
To address these concerns, Meta has reportedly built multiple security protections into the rollout, including:
Reserved usernames for verified accounts and public figures.
Strong safeguards against username guessing.
Limits on unsolicited messages.
Additional context for first-time conversations.
Notifications whenever usernames are created or changed.
These measures are intended to reduce scams and identity misuse while allowing users to enjoy the privacy benefits of the new system.
Although the username feature does not negate WhatsApp's existing phone number-based identity system, the latter certainly adds a crucial aspect of privacy which users have been longing for since ages.
Allowing individuals to connect while hiding their mobile phone number will make the use of WhatsApp platform much safer for transactions, networking, business, and connecting with new people. With the expansion of this feature on a global scale in the coming weeks, millions of users will be getting access to it.
If all the security features as claimed by Meta prove themselves effective, WhatsApp usernames might just become one of the biggest privacy features of the platform ever.
